Focused Conversations

Our new Focused Conversations program expands engaging opportunities for faculty to get together to discuss their teaching practices. It’s super easy: there’s no requirement to visit a class, and no commitment beyond the single conversation that you set up according to what fits your own schedule.

On our conversation partners page (see link just below) you’ll find a list of experienced faculty who are willing to meet with you one-on-one to talk about what works, what doesn’t, and to tell stories, share information, and discuss ideas for and experiences with effective exercises and practices. You pick the conversation partner, schedule the meeting, and prepare to have a fun conversation with a thoughtful, experienced partner about a teaching topic that matters.

What’s the focus topic?

This Spring 2014 semester, we support you in getting together for substantive discussions on our pedagogical theme of the year: inclusivity and identity-safety in the classroom and its contributions to rigor and improved performance for all.

Each semester, we will identify one or two topics of proven interest to our faculty, and organize a group of conversation partners accessible through the CTE webpage to support you in pursuing a focused conversation on the topic, through the process described below. If you’re interested in proposing a topic for a future focus, please drop us an email – we’re always looking for new ideas.

How does it work?

It’s easy. Scroll down and you’ll find a list of faculty who are eager to get together for coffee, tea or lunch to talk with you about the rationale for, methods and/or challenges they’ve worked through as they’ve worked to create safer and more effective inclusive classrooms, along with their contact information. When you’re ready, contact a conversation partner directly, and set up a mutually-convenient time for a focused conversation. The two of you meet and take it from there. And that’s all there is to it.

How do I get started?

This semester, our Focused Conversations program runs from February 18 to April 4, 2014. The link below takes you to our list of hosts:
